Political cooperation

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Belarus and the Federal Republic of Nigeria were established on August 3, 1992.

On December 5, 2011 the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in the Federal Republic of Nigeria started operations.

On May 15, 2012 the Ambassador of the Republic of Belarus in Nigeria  Mr. Vyacheslav V. Beskosty  presented his credentials to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Mr. Goodluck E. Jonathan.

On   November 1, 2018 the Ambassador of the Republic of Belarus in Nigeria  Mr. Vyacheslav Bril presented his credentials to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Mr. M.Buhari.


Meetings and contacts

Since 1992 bilateral political contacts were carried at the level of permanent representative missions to UN, in the course of Non-Aligned Movement summits and African Union summits.

In May 2010 – meeting of the First Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Mr. Vladimir Semashko with the State Minister of foreign affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Mr. A.Hong in the framework of the «Group of Fifteen» summit in Teheran.

In September 2011 – meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Mr. Sergei Martynov and the State Minister of foreign affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Prof. Viola Onvuliri in the framework of the Ministerial meeting of Non-Aligned Movement in Belgrade, on the occasion of 50th anniversary of the Movement.

In May 2012 – meeting of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Mr. Sergei Aleinik and the State Minister of foreign affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Prof. Viola Onvuliri in the framework of the regular Non-Aligned Movement summit in Sharm el-Sheikh.

In July — August 2013 – visit of the Minister of State 1 for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria prof. V.Onwuliri to the Republic of Belarus.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to hold bilateral consultations was signed during the visit. Belarusian side hosted the first ever round of consultations. Prof. V.Onwuliri met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Mr. Vladimir Makei and the Deputy Minister Mr. Valentin Rybakov, visited the largest industrial enterprises in Belarus (“MTW”, “MAZ”), as well as the Belarusian State University.

In September 2014 – first ever visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Mr. Vladimir Makei to Nigeria.

Among the members of the delegation were representatives of the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “Minsk Automobile Plant”, “Minsk Tractor Works” and other Belarusian enterprises. During the visit, the Head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry was received by President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Mr. Goodluck Jonathan. During the meeting the parties discussed the ipossibilities of strengthening bilateral relations in the political, economic, military-technical and other fields. The President of Nigeria received the personal letter from the President of the Republic of Belarus Mr. Alexander Lukashenko, with an invitation to visit Belarus. Within the frameworks of the visit Mr. Vladimir Makei also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Mr. Aminu Wali, National Security Advisor Mr. Sambo Dasuki and Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment Mr. Olusegun Aganga The Head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry awarded Patents to newly appointed Honorary Consuls of Belarus to Nigeria.

On April 4, 2016 the second round of political consultations between the foreign ministries of Belarus and Nigeria took place.
